The road between Diani and Mombasa is more than just a way to get to the airport — it passes some genuinely worthwhile stops. Whether you're on a scenic drive, a shopping trip, or just breaking up the journey, here are 8 places worth a short detour.
1. Ukunda town
The main hub just north of Diani — useful for a supermarket run, a SIM card, or an ATM before you settle in.
2. Likoni Ferry viewpoint
The ferry crossing itself offers a great view of Mombasa's old harbour and the container port — worth a photo even if you're just passing through.
3. Nyali Beach
If you have time on the Mombasa side, Nyali's beachfront restaurants make a good lunch stop before heading back south.
4. Fort Jesus, Mombasa Old Town
A short detour into Mombasa Island brings you to this 16th-century Portuguese fort and the narrow streets of Old Town — one of the coast's most historic sites.
5. Shelly Beach
Just south of Likoni, a quieter alternative beach worth a stop if you're travelling slowly.
6. Local fruit and vegetable stalls, Ukunda–Diani road
Roadside stalls sell fresh coconuts, mangoes and passionfruit at a fraction of resort prices — a favourite quick stop for our drivers.
7. Kongo Mosque ruins
A little-visited historic site near Diani, worth a stop for anyone interested in the coast's Swahili heritage.
8. Diani Beach itself
And of course — the destination. Wide white sand, calm turquoise water inside the reef, and some of the best beach bars on the coast to end the journey.
